A City Center movie theater complex plans to open in late May with a noticeably different concept than originally pitched several years ago. Paragon City Center 12 is expecting to open in time for the release of "X-Men: Days of Future Past" in 3-D the night of May 22, said James Herd, Paragon chief operating officer, during a media tour of the building. The 12-screen movie theater with roughly 1,200 recliner seats will feature two connected restaurants: a create-your-own-pizza fast-casual concept called My Pi and a "gastropub" called Neo Kitchen and Bar. The restaurants will have their own separate dining spaces and exterior entrances on Fountains Way in addition to being open to the theater lobby.

The 12-screen Paragon movie theater under construction in City Center is set to open in late May with two connected restaurants. An Italian restaurant featuring outdoor bar seating and fire pits will join the complex in October. Florida-based Paragon Theaters began advertising that it's "coming soon" online and with signs around the building, where passers-by may notice the geometric windows of the entrance at the corner of Fountain Way and Mariners Row facing the fountain. Paragon will be upgrading both theaters and will be adding premier and reserved seating, 3-D screens and a bar-lounge component. The Atlantis 15 will now be the Odyssey 15 and both theaters will be closed briefly while they undergo changes and staff training. The theaters will be updated with Sony 4K digital projection, which will make them the only all-Sony 4K HD theaters in their respective markets. The Paragon Odyssey will reopen in mid-February, although its VIP premier seating won’t be available until Spring 2011.

Florida-based Paragon Theaters purchased the theatre, along with another in Rochester. As a result, both theatres will be closed "for a short time" to allow for training of new staff and installation of amenity upgrades, according to a statement from Paragon. The Atlantis is scheduled to re-open in mid-February.

A few years ago, we were on our way to a press trip in Brazil with some other journalists; our trip was leaving from Miami so the group had the chance to arrive a day early for a little R&R at the Sonesta Bayfront Hotel Coconut Grove before our trip. The hotel is in a great location; from its Sonesta’s Panomara restaurant we were able to enjoy a great view of Coconut Grove’s sailboat bay (photos, above and right)–and we were just a short walk from the incredible shopping of Coconut Grove.

- by Bill Freehling. Take a look at the movie listings this weekend for the Muvico and Regal theaters across State Route 3 from each other. You'll notice no overlap between what they're showing. That's no coincidence. The two theaters, which are in different localities but are only about a mile apart, aren't allowed to show the same movies. The exact reason for that is unclear. A principal with the local Muvico operation believes Regal specifically asked for it to limit competition, while the general manager at the Marquee Cinemas in Spotsylvania County says that's been the way it has worked in the industry for a long time.
